Can Cats Eat Black Beans? Tiny Plain Spoon Only
Use caution
Plain cooked black beans can be a tiny occasional taste for some healthy cats, but cats do not need them.
Black BeansCall for risky mixes
Call your veterinarian if black beans were raw, spicy, mixed with onion or garlic, or followed by repeated vomiting, diarrhea, or pain.
Plain black beans are not the same as black bean dishes
Most black bean recipes include salt, onion, garlic, hot sauce, spices, or fat that do not belong in a cat treat.
Gas is the common problem
Even plain beans can upset digestion, so a tiny amount is the limit.
Serve them plain
- Use only soft, fully cooked, plain black beans.
- Offer a tiny spoon-tip amount and stop there.
- Rinse canned beans well, or skip them if sodium is high.
Skip these versions
- Raw beans, dry beans, chili, refried beans, bean dip, canned salty beans, onion, garlic, cumin-heavy seasoning, hot sauce, and bacon fat.
- Black beans for cats with digestive disease, diabetes, weight concerns, urinary issues, or prescription diets unless your veterinarian approves them.
- Using beans as a protein replacement for a cat.
Watch
- Gas, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, belly pain, low appetite, or litter-box changes.
Portion
Use only a tiny spoon-tip amount. Black beans should not replace complete cat food.
