Call if illness continues

Call your veterinarian if the rice had onion or garlic, or if vomiting, diarrhea, pain, or appetite loss continues.

Do not self-treat illness

A bland bite is not a substitute for veterinary care when a cat is sick.

Ingredients matter

Broth, butter, salt, onion, garlic, and sauce change the answer.

Offer plain cooked rice

  • Cook until soft and offer a tiny plain spoonful.
  • Use no salt, butter, oil, broth, onion, garlic, seasoning, vegetables, or sauce.

Avoid seasoned rice

  • Fried rice, seasoned rice, rice cooked in onion or garlic broth, buttery rice, rice pudding, hard dry rice, and large portions.
  • Rice as a treatment for vomiting or diarrhea without veterinary guidance.

Watch

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, gas, appetite changes, or belly discomfort.

Portion

A teaspoon or less is enough for many cats.
