Can Cats Eat Basil? Tiny Washed Leaf Only
Use caution
A tiny washed basil leaf is usually okay for a healthy cat, but cats do not need herbs.
BasilCall for oil or sauce
Call your veterinarian if basil was part of pesto, essential oil, a seasoned dish, or if symptoms appear.
Fresh leaf is not the same as pesto
Pesto and sauces can bring garlic, onion, oil, salt, cheese, and nuts into the question.
Let disinterest be the answer
Most cats do not need or want herbs. If your cat walks away, do not try to make basil appealing.
Keep it plain
- Use one tiny washed fresh leaf if you allow a taste.
- Keep it plain with no oil, salt, garlic, onion, lemon, or cheese.
- Stop if your cat ignores it or has stomach upset.
Skip these versions
- Pesto, basil oil, essential oils, dried seasoning blends, sauces, and cooked dishes with garlic or onion.
- Large amounts of basil or repeated herb treats.
- Herbs for cats with vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite, or a restricted diet unless your veterinarian approves them.
Watch
- Drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, low appetite, or mouth irritation after chewing herbs.
Portion
One tiny leaf is plenty. Basil should not become a routine snack or a substitute for complete cat food.
