Can Cats Eat Beet Greens? Tiny Plain Bite Only
Use caution
A tiny plain bite of washed beet greens may be okay for some healthy cats, but they are easy to skip.
Beet GreensCall for urinary signs
Call your veterinarian if urinary signs appear, symptoms repeat, or your cat has kidney or urinary history and ate more than a tiny bite.
Medical history changes the answer
For a healthy cat, the question is mostly portion and plain prep. For cats with urinary or kidney history, ask your veterinarian first.
Seasoned greens are not the same food
Salt, butter, oil, vinegar, bacon, onion, garlic, and sauces are the common reasons to say no.
Keep it plain
- Wash well and use only a tiny plain bite.
- Cook until soft if your cat is likely to swallow pieces whole.
- Stop at a taste and return to complete cat food.
Skip these versions
- Salted, buttered, oily, pickled, creamed, or seasoned beet greens.
- Beet greens cooked with onion, garlic, bacon, vinegar-heavy dressing, or spicy sauces.
- Beet greens for cats with urinary crystals, kidney disease, digestive disease, or prescription diets unless your veterinarian approves them.
Watch
- Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, low appetite, straining in the litter box, frequent urination, or signs of discomfort.
Portion
One tiny bite is enough. Skip beet greens if your cat has urinary, kidney, digestive, or diet restrictions.
