Can Cats Eat Flaxseed? Tiny Plain Pinch Only
Safe in moderation
A tiny plain pinch of flaxseed may be okay for some healthy cats, but it is optional.
FlaxseedCall for toxic mixes or symptoms
Call your veterinarian if your cat ate a large amount, ate flaxseed in a toxic mix, or develops symptoms.
Whole seeds may pass through
Do not expect flaxseed to add meaningful nutrition from a casual sprinkle.
Mixes are the risk
Seed blends and baked goods can add raisins, chocolate, xylitol, salt, or fat.
Use a tiny plain pinch
- Use a tiny plain pinch only.
- Keep it dry, fresh, and free of seasoning or sweeteners.
- Put the bag away so your cat cannot eat a pile of seeds.
Skip mixes and big servings
- Large amounts, sweetened seed blends, granola, baked goods, oils, salt, garlic, onion, chocolate, raisins, or nut mixes.
- Flaxseed for cats with digestive disease, pancreatitis risk, prescription diets, or appetite problems unless your veterinarian approves it.
- Using seeds as a coat or constipation fix without a diagnosis.
Watch
- Vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, gas, appetite change, or litter-box changes after flaxseed.
Portion
A pinch is enough. Cats should get their normal nutrition from complete cat food.
