Can Cats Eat Pumpkin Seeds? Usually Skip Them
Usually skip
Usually skip pumpkin seeds. They are not toxic in plain form, but they are not a good everyday cat treat.
Pumpkin SeedsAsk your vet
Call your veterinarian if many seeds were eaten, they were seasoned, or vomiting, pain, choking, or repeated diarrhea starts.
Plain still is not useful
A seed is not a better treat than a measured cat treat or a small bite of plain meat.
Seasoning changes everything
Salt, garlic, onion, spice blends, and snack mixes make pumpkin seeds a much worse exposure.
How to handle it
- Do not offer salted or seasoned pumpkin seeds.
- If your veterinarian specifically suggests them, use a tiny amount of plain, finely ground seed only.
Avoid
- Salted seeds, roasted seasoned seeds, shells, trail mix, spicy pepitas, garlic, onion, sugar coatings, chocolate mixes, and large amounts.
- Pumpkin seeds for cats with pancreatitis risk, digestive sensitivity, obesity, urinary diets, or prescription diets unless your veterinarian approves.
Watch
- Vomiting, diarrhea, belly pain, gas, refusing food, thirst, gagging, coughing, or behavior that feels wrong.
Portion
No routine serving. If used under guidance, keep it tiny and finely ground.
