Can Cats Eat Red Leaf Lettuce? Tiny Plain Pieces Only

Tiny plain piece only

A tiny clean piece of red leaf lettuce is usually okay, but it is not important for cats.

Ask your vet

Call your veterinarian if lettuce was part of a salad with onion or garlic, or if symptoms repeat.

Fresh and washed

The lettuce itself is less concerning than dirt, spoilage, dressing, onion, or garlic.

Do not push greens

If your cat ignores lettuce, that is a perfectly good answer.

Serve

  • Wash well and use only a tiny plain torn leaf piece.
  • Throw away wilted, slimy, or spoiled leaves and skip pre-dressed salad mixes.

Avoid

  • Dressing, vinaigrette, onion, garlic, salt, cheese, croutons, seasoned salads, spoiled leaves, and large handfuls.
  • Lettuce for cats with digestive disease, poor appetite, prescription diets, or a history of vomiting after greens.

Watch

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, belly pain, appetite changes, or behavior that feels wrong.

Portion

One small torn piece is enough.
