Can Cats Eat Red Cabbage? Tiny Plain Pieces Only

Tiny plain piece only

A tiny plain shred of red cabbage is usually okay, but cats do not need cabbage.

Ask your vet

Call your veterinarian if red cabbage was part of a salad with onion or garlic, or if digestive signs repeat.

Plain shred only

Slaw, pickles, vinegar, onion, garlic, and dressing are the usual problem ingredients.

Gas is the limit

Cabbage can be gassy, so larger servings are not useful for cats.

Serve

  • Wash well and offer only a tiny plain shred if your cat is healthy and curious.
  • Skip tough core pieces and stop if your cat walks away.

Avoid

  • Coleslaw, dressing, vinegar, pickled cabbage, sauerkraut, onion, garlic, salt, oil, seasoned salads, and large amounts.
  • Red cabbage for cats with digestive sensitivity, thyroid concerns, urinary diets, or prescription diets unless your veterinarian approves.

Watch

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, belly pain, appetite changes, or behavior that feels wrong.

Portion

One tiny shred is enough.
