Ask your vet

Call your veterinarian if soybeans were salted, seasoned with onion or garlic, swallowed as pods, or symptoms repeat.

Pods are not treats

Edamame pods are fibrous and awkward for cats to chew.

Soy sauce is the trap

Salt, soy sauce, garlic, onion, and stir-fry seasonings change the answer.

Serve

  • Use fully cooked shelled soybeans with no salt, soy sauce, oil, garlic, onion, or seasoning.
  • Cut or mash a tiny amount so it is easy to chew.

Avoid

  • Raw soybeans, edamame pods, salted edamame, soy sauce, oil, garlic, onion, stir-fry, miso-heavy foods, and large portions.
  • Soybeans for cats with food allergies, digestive sensitivity, kidney disease, thyroid concerns, or prescription diets unless your veterinarian approves.

Watch

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, belly pain, itching, appetite changes, choking, or behavior that feels wrong.

Portion

One mashed or cut soybean is enough.
