Can Cats Eat Yogurt? Usually Skip It
Usually skip
Yogurt is usually best skipped. A tiny plain unsweetened taste may be tolerated by some cats, but it is not needed.
YogurtCall for chocolate, unknown products, or symptoms
Call your veterinarian if the yogurt contained chocolate, raisins, medication ingredients, or if repeated vomiting, diarrhea, pain, or lethargy occurs.
Plain matters
Fruit, sweeteners, chocolate, granola, and honey change the answer.
Dairy can bother cats
Even plain yogurt can cause vomiting, gas, or diarrhea in some cats.
Use plain only
- If offering any, use only a tiny amount of plain unsweetened yogurt.
- Check for xylitol, artificial sweeteners, chocolate, fruit mix-ins, granola, honey, and high fat.
Avoid sweetened yogurt
- Flavored yogurt, sweetened yogurt, sugar-free yogurt, xylitol, chocolate, raisins, granola, honey, high-fat yogurt, and large portions.
- Yogurt for cats with dairy sensitivity, pancreatitis risk, obesity, kidney disease, diabetes, or prescription diets unless your veterinarian approves.
Watch
- Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, belly discomfort, itchiness, appetite changes, or lethargy.
Portion
A tiny lick is enough if tried at all.
