Can Cats Eat Romaine Lettuce? Tiny Plain Pieces Only

Tiny plain piece only

A tiny clean piece of romaine is usually okay, but lettuce is not important for cats.

Ask your vet

Call your veterinarian if romaine was part of a salad with onion or garlic, or if symptoms repeat.

Salad is different

Dressing, garlic, onion, cheese, croutons, and salt are not part of a safe lettuce nibble.

Freshness matters

Wilted or slimy lettuce is not worth offering.

Serve

  • Wash well and offer only a tiny plain torn piece.
  • Throw away wilted, slimy, or spoiled leaves.

Avoid

  • Dressing, Caesar salad, onion, garlic, croutons, cheese, salt, seasoned salads, spoiled leaves, and large handfuls.
  • Romaine for cats with digestive disease, poor appetite, prescription diets, or a history of vomiting after greens.

Watch

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, belly pain, appetite changes, or behavior that feels wrong.

Portion

One small torn piece is enough.
