Can Cats Eat Tempeh? Usually Skip It

Tiny plain cooked piece only

Tempeh is usually best skipped. A tiny plain cooked piece is unlikely to matter for many cats, but it is not useful nutrition for them.

Ask your vet

Call your veterinarian if the tempeh included onion or garlic, or if repeated vomiting, diarrhea, pain, or lethargy occurs.

Seasoning is common

Most tempeh is served with marinades or sauces that are not cat-safe.

Meat treats are cleaner

A small piece of plain cooked chicken is usually a better choice than soy.

Serve

  • Use only plain cooked tempeh and offer one tiny piece at most.
  • Avoid marinades, soy sauce, salt, garlic, onion, chili, oil, and fried preparations.

Avoid

  • Raw tempeh, seasoned tempeh, soy sauce, garlic, onion, chili, teriyaki, barbecue sauce, fried tempeh, and large portions.
  • Tempeh for cats with soy sensitivity, digestive disease, pancreatitis risk, urinary diets, or prescription diets unless your veterinarian approves.

Watch

  • Vomiting, diarrhea, gas, itchiness, appetite changes, belly discomfort, or behavior that feels abnormal.

Portion

One tiny cube is more than enough.
